90s Hour

Hello, Chelmsford!

Your friend and fellow resident, Alan Chambers here, inviting you to tune in to the "90s Hour" on City Sound Radio. As a proud Chelmsford native who began his radio journey right as the 90s were taking off, I have a special affection for this vibrant decade of music - from Britpop and Acid Jazz to Drum and Bass, Trip-Hop, and beyond!

Ah! The Britpop era - where Blur and Oasis battled it out in the charts while defining the sound of a generation. The catchy hooks and poignant lyrics of this genre truly encapsulated the essence of British youth culture at the time.

Meanwhile, Acid Jazz was creating its own stir with Jamiroquai's 'Virtual Insanity' serving up a fusion of jazz, funk, pop, and soul that was irresistible. The unique grooves laid down by bands like Incognito and Brand New Heavies added another layer to this eclectic decade's soundscape.

As if that wasn’t enough diversity for one decade, Drum and Bass exploded onto the scene with hard-hitting rhythms courtesy of Goldie's 'Inner City Life', while Trip-Hop acts like Massive Attack were blending elements of hip hop with electronic music to create an entirely new sonic experience.

And let's not forget Pop Mainstream – how could we? The Spice Girls were making 'Girl Power' a global mantra with their catchy tunes that no one could resist singing along to.

However, it wasn’t just about pop stars and chart-toppers; it was also a massive decade for rock! Here at City Sound Radio we’re fortunate enough to have Wayne & Mark - our resident heavy metal gurus. Having spent their youth (and beyond!) immersed in rock festivals and beer tents across the country, they've been instrumental in bringing both classic rock anthems and newer gems to our airwaves. Their show is an eclectic mix of everything from AC/DC to Yungblud - and a whole lot of wild, headbanging tunes in between!

So, whether you're a pop fanatic, rock enthusiast, or a lover of all things 90s, we've got you covered. Join me every weekday during the "90s Hour" on City Sound Radio. We'll relive this iconic decade together through its music, its culture and its unforgettable characters. Trust me; it's going to be 'mega'!
